Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses

Welcome to my first book review on this blog! I hope you like it!

A Court of Thorns and Roses (2015) by Sarah J. Maas, is a fictional, young adult novel will capture your attention from the first chapter.

This novel follows the story of Feyre, a 19 year old girl whose job is to look after and support her family of three.

Feyre has two older sisters and a crippled Dad, however when she made a promise to her dying mother that she would continue to support the family, Feyre has been seeing to that promise ever since and will never go back on her word.

When Feyre is out hunting for food in the woods and comes across a massive wolf, she has no care whether or not creature is wolf or a magical being and kills it. What Feyre does not realise is that by killing a magical creature she has broken a rule of the treaty between Fae and mortal and is told she has to live the rest of her life in the fairy realm.

Distressed by this news and taken to the fairy kingdom of Prythian, Feyre makes it her mission to find any loophole in the law to escape and return to her family. However, what she does not realise is that love can be found with the most unexpected people.

Living with her Fae captors Tamlin and Lucien, Feyre learns more than she expected about the history between Fae and mortal, and about the lives of fairies than she ever expected.

Doom is looming across Prythian and there seems to be no hope to end it.

This novel follows hints of Beauty and the Beast (1740) when learning that love is not just skin deep, along with aspects of Rumpelstiltskin (1812) when learning about making deals with fairies.

This novel is a great read and I would definitely recommend it to people who love fantasy novels such as Maggie Stiefvaters' Lament (2008) series and Joss Stirlings' Finding Sky (2011) books.
